Without meaning to sound negative or anything, is it really necessary to charge people to have stalls on the Cowley Road Carnival?
Some artist friends and I always used to put up a stall with on the spot paintings and clothes, but last year the security gaurds waited til there was only one girl on the stall and just started packing up our things without even saying anything to her.
We thought it might have something to do with the sponsorship. I mean it's not really in the spirit of things..
The Carnival is a free event that is organised and underwritten by East Oxford Action, a local, not for profit business. We have to find tens ouf thousands of pounds from a range of sources to pay for closing the road, providing toilets, first aid, security and a range of other requirements set by local authorities and the Emergency Services.
We aim to make the Carnival sustainable and part of this is finding enough money to pay for the event. 20-25,000 people attend for free. We get money from grants (Arts Council, City Council), sponsorship (BMW, Aziz Restaurants, Midcounties Cooperative and other local businesses), but still make a significant loss.
Your friend would appear to be a small trader, we are asking for £50+VAT for small traders, considerably less than they would be asked to pay at similar sized events elsewhere.
I hope this answers your comment, and hope you will come along and enjoy the day.
Thanks
